Profile Information

Hometown:
West Asheville
Gardening Experience:
Expert
About Me:
I love all things related to gardens.
On weekends my husband has to make me come inside the house. Even after it's dark. I will garden for hours on end and it will feel like only 10 minutes have gone by.
I certified as a master gardener in 1996 in Lincoln County, N.C.
I love to visit public gardens. I go on garden tours.
I love to grow flowers to cut for vases, for me to enjoy at home and work, and sometimes to even give away.
I also enjoy growing my own food but I have a lot of mature oaks on my lot and so I've kind of had to choose between the flowers or the veggies.
I was raised on a 40-acre farm in Indiana until the age of 13 and I would farm for a living if I thought I could make it pay my bills.
I have always gardened as an adult, even in college.
Other info: Husband of 16 years, 13-year-old son. My dog, a Sheltie.
Favorite Plants:
The peony is my all-time favorite. I also love roses, zinnias, mums, and many more flowers. I am also very partial to herbs, including rosemary and thyme, plus lemon verbena and bay. But I'm not a big basil fan.
For shrubs, nandinas and false indigo. Plus you can't beat azaleas, but I was slow to come to this realization. For trees, weeping cherry, tulip poplars and maples.
Garden as a hobby?
Yes

Carolina Gardener magazine

I do like Carolina Gardener magazine, even if I don't get it regularly (and I should). Asheville's own Peter Loewer is a regular contributor and you should check it out. In the current issue he has an article titled "Garden Art with Water: Add a dramatic touch to your garden with a water feature."

"Windowsill Herb Gardens" by Rita Pelczar also sounds intriguing.

One particularly useful feature is a listing of Carolina gardening events:… Continue

Want to make a wreath?

It’s wreath-making season, and if you’re interested in a wreath workshop, they abound. A sample from the Home & Garden Calendar (disclaimer: first and last ones not technically wreath workshops, but they are similar):

THANKSGIVING TABLE DECORATION WORKSHOP:
Artist Tamsin Allpress demonstrates making whimsical decorations out of all-natural materials, 2-4 p.m. Nov. 17, Bullington Center, 33 Upper Red Oak Trail, Hendersonville. Materials provided for participants to make their own. $20… Continue

Insignificant flowers

It’s like learning to drink port or sherry as you grow older.
I’ve always been a flower person, but foliage for the sake of glorious foliage also has its place, I have learned. When reading about a certain plant here or there, one runs across the term “insignificant flowers.”
OK, what gives?
Well, plants with insignificant flowers often have other gifts, like wondrous variegated foliage.
I recently installed one such plant in an urn, in a prominent place in my garden. And I even put a solar ligh… Continue

More details on National Chrysanthemum Society Show in Asheville

I just spoke with Ray McKenzie-Wilson, of Horse Shoe, president of the N.C. Chrysanthemum Society, who tells me there will not only be the show but a national National Chrysanthemum Society Convention in Asheville, beginning Oct. 15. It will be headquartered at the Holiday Inn Airport.

But back to the show, which will be held Saturday-Sunday at the N.C. Arboretum. Between 100-200 exhibitors are expected. Folks, this is going to be a really big show. Ed Norton, of Waynesville, is coordinator of… Continue

I'm trying to work out some kind of alliance with the groundhogs. I would like to co-exist, if that is possible. There is a fox family out there, too.

I finally posted a photo of the Empress/Paulownia Tree. The 2 photos on my page show the tree two weeks apart. This tree is new to me, but since becoming familiar with it, I see this tree very often along the insterstate and highways. It is a very fast growing tree.

The other tree is the fruit salad tree - supposed to grow 5 different kinds of fruit. It's hard to see in the photo, but it's obvious a totally different looking branch is growing off that main tree. I'm fascinated with it and it's growing very well.

I also got the "Annika Sanford" has posted a comment on your page. But when I looked, there was no comment and it didn't direct me anywhere else.

The greenhouse is full of heathers, alot of research this winter and experimenting this spring has helped this year with everything coming together.

loved the edible landscape thing. oh, by the by, i would only sell my 1/2 acre in nw fla to a fellow plant person. the brand new homes next door are the mutilate and lawn types. My taxes are only 82 bucks a year by the way as its an old trailer so a handyperson would be good. Maybe some older folks want to be sure that their trees WONT be cut. Julianne2saw@yahoo.com and thus would consider selling it to me.

Hey Polly,
Thanks for the interest! I am small-One frame and surrounding space. I grow perennials-some common and some natives-a few ferns and grasses. I can email you a list of current items if you are interested. From what I can tell on the site-you must have a fantastic yard! Thanks for adding me as a friend.
